If you are visiting the United States and New Hampshire for the first time, we've answered some of the questions we hear most frequently from international visitors.
Q. What is the sales tax rate in New Hampshire?
A. There is no tax on retail goods in New Hampshire, so bring an extra suitcase to fill with all the bargains you will find while here. Prepared food is taxed at 8% (this is sometimes included in the price, but you may want to confirm that with your server) in shops and restaurants. Lodging is also subject to an 8% tax.
Q. What time zone is New Hampshire in?
A. Eastern Standard Time, which is –5 hours of G.M.T.
Q. Will my cell phone work in the USA?
A. Cell phones from different continents operate on different frequencies. However, a lot of new handsets are tri-band which means they should be able to pick up the frequency you need to be able to use your phone. Check with your service provider prior to leaving home to make sure that your plan allows you to roam in other countries.
Q. Will my personal appliances work in USA electrical outlets?
A. As long as any of your appliances operate from 100-240V and 50-60Hz, they should operate fine; however, you still may need a travel plug, or adapter. These are readily available at most appliance stores and airport shops.
Q. What are the accepted guidelines for gratuities in the USA?
A. Waiters, waitresses, and bartenders in U.S. restaurants are paid a lower wage as their income is dependent upon gratuities. The accepted gratuity in a restaurant is 15 - 20% of the pre-tax cost of your meal. The standard gratuity for hotel bellmen is $1.00 per bag; chambermaids, $2.00 per night; doormen, $1.00 per activity; and taxi drivers, 10 - 15% of the fare. In every situation feel free to base your actual gratuity on the quality of the service you receive.
